Travelling to Thailand as Malaysian

An exceedingly popular weekend getaway choice for most locals given our proximity to the Thai border, the Land of Smiles hosts a considerable number of tourists from Malaysia, numbering 4.56 million in 2023. Much of that can be attributed to how easy it is to travel between both countries, with Malaysians being granted a 30-day visa exemption as a tourist, before applying for a permit with local authorities to extend their trip by another 30 days if needed.

For those intending to stay for upwards of three to six months, you are recommended to apply for a 90-day Special Tourist Visa (STV), which comes with two 90-day visa extensions. You will be required to apply for each extension with the local immigration office, but once granted, you can remain in Thailand for upwards of nine months in total.

Firefly Bar

What to order: The “Thai Old-Fashioned” with jasmine rice and salted coconut sugar

Sometimes all you need after a long day is to bask yourself in good energy; an intimate ambience, like watching the warm glow of a firefly in the dark. Firefly Bar’s dark wood walls in contrast with the green paneling of the bar spell out a certain old-world charm in a contemporary setting — classic, but not old, opulent, but not stuffy. The signature cocktail menu takes you on an adventure around the world, complete with live jazz on the regular. The Thai Old-Fashioned (THB 520) never fails to impress the crowd.

What to order: The tiki cocktails, and tequila shots — in any order

Those planning to visit Bar.Yard will likely cancel any other plans for the night. Come a bit early for their backyard barbecue dishes and watch the sun set, then stay a while for the tiki-influenced drinks and unmatched energy. From electro-funk to disco, DJs are behind the station to make sure your feet are moving all night long. Fridays and Saturdays are generally when you’ll see the place in all its glory, but Taco Tuesdays offer all tacos at THB 70 each, so you know what to do, boo.

Crimson Room

What to order: The chocolate-y spin on the Negroni, the “Gianduja Negroni”

It’s one of the staple bars of Langsuan. No matter how times are changing, or where you are in the world, the rhythm of music brings us together — that’s what the signature menu at Crimson Room is all about. “We’re known for jazz, and we want to let the guests feel it in the drinks, too,” says Head Bartender James Kosil. It’s also very fitting as a jazz bar, with velvet curtains and seats, and performers taking the grandiose centre stage. You’ll find yourself swayed by the music and smiling cheek to cheek in no time.

What to order: The signature Bloody Mary

The history of cocktails spans hundreds of years, and birthed thousands of classic cocktails and their variations. Some of them stayed, some died out, some got resurrected, and some were tweaked to make them keep up with the times. Vesper’s sister bar 4th Wall serves up a rotation of classic drinks for you to discover, or simply order your favourite classic. They also introduced a handful of classic twists. Nothing can beat their Signature Irish Coffee with palm sugar and vanilla cream, or the Signature Bloody Mary, served with crispy chicken skin.

Opening times: Open daily, 7pm-2am
Location: Luxx Langsuan, 828 Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel Lumphini, Pathum Wan, Bangkok

The Pickwicks Chronicles

What to order: Anything with gin, really

The Pickwicks Chronicles is inspired by Charles Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers, a story of a group of friends who traveled to a bleak, desolate place: England. Each character from the story makes an appearance as a signature cocktail. Although all of the drinks are equally charming, we found ourselves especially dazzled by their gin-based selection, such as the Tracy Tupman (THB 350), pairing Lady Trieu Dalat Flowerbomb Gin with watermelon and mint. They have a great selection of gins, so go wild, Martini enthusiasts. Out of the many bars in Langsuan, this one may capture your heart.

Opening times: Open daily, 6pm-1am
Location: 76/10 Lumphini, Pathum Wan, Bangkok 10330

Ms.Jigger

What to order: The amazing pre-dinner and post-dinner signature cocktails

Bars that share the same space with restaurants are often victims of prejudgment, and we admit we were also one of those offenders. But as we sat down and took a sip at Ms. Jigger, the clinks of silverware and chatter of dining guests behind us seemed to quickly fade away. All that is left are the drinks you order, the bookcase of spirits in front, and the hospitality of the bar that is beaming with warmth. The signature menu takes you on a journey to different parts of Thailand. They combined Thai milk tea with Campari into a milk punch twist (THB 440) and made it make sense somehow.

The Black Cat

What to order: The classic cocktails

The Black Cat’s concept is all about auspiciousness, presenting cocktails as different cat breeds many cultures see as good luck. They feature quite a number of local Thai spirits, and we love them for it. However, flip through the pages and you’ll see the wide array of classic cocktails they offer at THB 350 each, from bar staples to lesser-known creations for you to discover. The French Martini is a fruity take on the Vodka Martini with pineapple and raspberry. The Pink Squirrel is a rich and creamy drink with notes of almond and chocolate. We could go on, but we’d love for you to self-embark to find a new favourite.

ANJU Korean Rooftop Bar

What to order: Honey lemon soju, and some tteokbokki

One of the most beloved Korean bar concepts found its way to Langsuan, and ANJU takes it up even further. The neon-lit bar is perched on the 31st floor of the Sindhorn Midtown Hotel, with signature drinks made with Korean ingredients, and inspired by the vibrant nightlife of Gangnam. Our advice is to come with an empty stomach, order a bowl of tteokbokki (THB 320) and ramyeon (THB 290) to share, and be ready to light up the dance floor. Although we do adore the signature cocktails, the best experience at these Korean-style bars is to get a few rounds of soju bombs and see where the night takes you.

Opening times: Open daily, 5pm-2am
Location: Sindhorn Midtown Hotel Bangkok, 68 Soi Langsuan, Lumphini, Pathum Wan, Bangkok
Nearest station: Chit Lom, BTS
