The June 2024 edition of #LSADrinks continues to take a look at the most exciting events and launches happening in Malaysia and beyond. Whether it’s the launch of Hennessy V.S.O.P night Blaze or the unveiling of Roku Sakura Bloom, there’s just so much to look forward to in the world of ABV. The Balvenie and Lim Pui Wan collaborate for Maker’s Project

Throughout the past few years, The Balvenie’s Makers Project has featured Malaysian artisans such as Fern Chua and Pamela Tan. For 2024, the distillery is partnering with Lim Pui Wan, a miniature diorama artist. A nod to craftsmanship, Lim created not one but five models that reflect The Balvenie’s Five Rare Crafts. They include the Malt Master, Coopers, Coppersmiths, Malt Men and Farmer. Lim on The Maker’s Project: “This project celebrates the intricate processes and heartfelt dedication that go into every bottle of whisky, mirroring my own commitment to creating art that tells a story, as we aim to honour the legacy of true artisanship”. During an event at The Grounds, The Balvenie hosted a get-together — emceed by Weena Marcus and led by Jyri Pylkkänen, Regional Malts Brand Ambassador of Southeast Asia. Guests had the opportunity to savour The Balvenie Double Wood 12 Year Old and The Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14 Year Old.

Bar Mood’s Nick Wu has created a cocktail exclusively for The RuMa Hotel & Residences

In conjunction with World Gin Day, The RuMa Hotel & Residences’ SEVEN Lobby Bar will be serving a set of specially curated cocktails. The Gin-finity and Beyond’ menu comprises five libations crafted by Nick Wu from Taipei’s Bar Mood. A recipient of the Ketel One Most Sustainable Bar Award in 2022, Bar Mood is known for its intriguing cocktails — many showcasing the best ingredients that can be found in Taiwan.

Two of his signature cocktails, ‘Season of Flower’ and ‘Presents of God’, are also included in the menu. The former is made with gin, elderflower liqueur, jasmine tea and lemon whereas the latter consists of gin, plum liqueur, passion fruit, early grey tea and lemon. Adding to allure of the limited time only menu is ‘Tropical Storm’ — a cocktail Wu made specifically for the hotel. Concocted using gin, blue curacao, papaya, pineapple, mango, lemon and double cream, the drink was unveiled during his guest shift on 7 June. Completing the menu are ‘Seaweed Ramos Gin Fizz’ and ‘ Vesper’: all available from now until the end of June 2024.

Woodford Reserve’s The Wonderful Race to crown champion on 7 June

First established last year, The Wonderful Race saw mixologists throughout Asia showcase their respective takes on the Old Fashioned using Woodford Reserve, including here in Malaysia. Held in Jann, the Malaysian leg was won by Backdoor Bodega’s Yung Shen Koh. Other winners from the region include China’s Ellen Xu, Singapore’s Raz Ng, Thailand’s Kornnaran Mingsamdang and South Korea’s In Kyu Hwang,

The finalists will next be heading to Kentucky in the United States of America where the Woodford Reserve Home Place is located. The competition — to be hosted by Tiffanie Barriere — on 7 June 2024 will see one of them garner the Grand Champion 2024, with judges including Holly Graham (Asia Envoy for Woodford Reserve Bourbon), Christian Suzuki-Orellana and Brown-Forman’s Marketing Director, Colton.

Asahi Super Dry adds Dry Crystal to its portfolio

Characterised by its three-low innovation, Asahi’s all-new Dry Crystal comprises 3.5% ABV. With Polaris. a special brewing technique, the beer has a clean finish. Compared to Asahi Super Dry, the Dry Crystal is said to have 70% less carbs and 40% less calories. Asahi Beer Asia’s Managing Director, Kinyi Choo, on the launch: “Dry Crystal is the next generation under the Super Dry edition and was created to respond to a change in consumer attitudes – a growing consciousness about what they are eating and drinking. The new product is perfect for those who want to enjoy a beer and not miss out in social situations while also maintaining a lifestyle of moderation”.

Hennessy unveils its all-new V.S.O.P Night Blaze bottle with song by Jackson Wang

In conjunction with the launch of the Hennessy V.S.O.P Night Blaze bottle, the brand partnered with Jackson Wang on a special song and music video. Called ‘henny’, the song is created to mirror the extraordinary experiences that the whisky brings. The limited edition bottle’s red hues and beautiful curves make it stand out — shown in the music video directed by Wang himself. The new Hennessy V.S.O.P bottle comes in a 1.5-litre version. During a party at Gemu KL, Hennessy teamed up with the likes of Ashley Lau, Caven Tang and Dato’ Maw for a one-of-a-kind performance of their original song, ‘Type A Way’.

Roku releases its first ever limited edition bottle, Sakura Bloom

The Roku Sakura Bloom Edition is a tribute to the annual Hanami Festival in Japan. The gin is characterised by its floral notes and when combined with the six Japanese botanicals, results in something truly extraordinary. On the limited edition release, Beam Suntory’s Global Advocacy Manager, James Bowker, said: “The ROKU Sakura Bloom Edition provides an immersion into the cultural origins of the product as well as providing a unique taste profile. Giving the brand a compelling point of difference in the premium gin market”.

In conjunction with the launch, Roku will be partnering with 20 bars throughout the country — each showcasing its own take on a cocktail with Roku Sakura Bloom. In addition, it has also collaborated with Lilin + Co on a special candle that can be found at Lilin + Co’s stores in PJ and Bangsar as well as online.

Bar Trigona celebrates a new milestone with latest accolade

At the 2024 Spirited Awards, Bar Trigona — housed in Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur — is celebrating its inclusion in the “Top Ten Best International Hotel Bars in the World” list. Helmed by Rohan Matmary since 2022, the bar has long been a favourite in Malaysia. On the news, the Head Bartender said: “It was amazing news for all the team to wake up to this morning, and I am so proud of what Bar Trigona has achieved. We launched our new menu, ‘Colour Me Curious’ earlier this year and this honour is incredibly gratifying for everyone who worked so hard to put it together and ensures that each valued guest has an unsurpassed experience of the menu’s celebration of the colours, aromas and regional flavours of our abundant nature. We are excited to continue to build on this success and ensure that Bar Trigona shines brightly on the global cocktail map, on behalf of Malaysia”.

Glenfiddich celebrates its Time Re:Imagined collection with dinner at Skillet

The Time Re:Imagined series is undoubtedly one of Glenfiddich’s most is iconic single malt collections ever. From the 30-Year-Old (Suspended Time) and 40-Year-Old (Cumulative Time) to 50-Year-Old (Suspended Time), these rare releases have been crafted by the distillery’s Malt Masters for the past six decades. Glenfiddich Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, on the series: “These aged whiskies, reaching 30, 40, and even 50 years, are unlike any others. Each possesses a unique flavour profile that can never be recreated. The longer a whisky ages, the more it develops, resulting in a more distinctive and uncommon character”. The dinner at Skillet was hosted by Julie Woon and Jyri Pylkkänen, the new Regional Malts Brand Ambassador of Southeast Asia — with a menu curated by Chef Raymond Tham.
