Nowhere is this more readily apparent than in a humdrum neighbourhood kopitiam setting, attracting a steady influx of Malaysian faces at all hours of the day.
The formula hasn’t changed much since its pre-war conception, where good value and hospitality remain the most prominent key denominators of a good kopitiam. With that said, it never hurts to add a dash of innovation to keep things interesting, and that is exactly what the team behind Ah Wong Office have managed to accomplish in their Section 17 outlet.
Easily standing out from among a row of older businesses, don’t be fooled by this fresh establishment’s fresh coat of paint, as the foundations can be traced all the way back to the proprietor’s grandparents, who first opened their own kopitiam in the sleepy provincial town of Taiping.
Heavily deriving inspiration from 1980s corporate chic, you will find yourself dining on office desks and swivel chairs, as hollow partition walls and fluorescent ceiling lights add to the ambience of sterility. But the food is promisingly wholesome, ticking all the right boxes from a rich bowl of tangy assam laksa made with a thoroughly simmered mackerel soup paired with deeply savoury prawn paste, to fluffy slices of Hainanese toast served with generous lashings of kaya and butter.

Taman Equine’s newest addition, The Bakes and Brews, employs a decidedly less grandiose approach and trades the high gloss in. for hospitable warmth and honestly prepared cups of Joe. A charming home-based business founded by the family who also happens to reside there, this space is probably best suited for pick-up coffees and pastries on the go, given the limited seating arrangement. It’s pleasantly simple, yet welcoming.
But should you find yourself in the good fortune of being able to snag one of the fold-out campsite chairs here to sip your afternoon away, be sure to make a point of ordering from their selection of small bites to go with your coffee of choice. We would recommend the Orange Americano, which is sure to offer a sprightly perk with its citrusy notes. The menu isn’t extensive, as one should readily anticipate, but offers enough variety to satiate most appetites in a pinch, with their mentaiko tamagoyaki sando sandwich, constructed with an omelette sandwiched between white bread and siracha-laced mentaiko sauce, being a particular highlight.

S.Pace Cafe
Vegetarian meals are almost completely dominated by age-old recipes here in Malaysia, with Chinese and Indian restaurants maintaining their roles as accessible and tasty stewards for a good cruelty-free meal for those who opt to go plant-based. But that isn’t to suggest that there isn’t already steady momentum among new entrepreneurs eager to tap into this increasingly popular dietary preference by offering more contemporary vegan dishes.
Meet S.Pace Cafe along Jalan 4/62a in Bandar Sri Manjalara, which hopes to stand at the forefront as one of the most promising new names in this space. It may not look it at first, but the owners have invested a pretty penny in bringing the dining experience up to par with its contemporaries, a fact best expressed when making your way inside. Pink-washed walls that evoke the ochre of a Spanish villa are tastefully accompanied by potted greens and an artificial skylight overhead, which conjures the illusion of nature being drawn inwards. A cement floor and matching barista counter further complete the illusion of an open courtyard.
Beyond picture-perfect backdrops, the food here warrants similar attention for its capacity to offer a great selection of conventional brunch eats that have all been given a vegan-friendly twist. You’ll find big breakfast sets replete with mushrooms, leafy greens, and legumes, bagels with your choice of peanut butter or cream cheese served with veggies, and even rice bowls with marinated tofu chunks in place of animal protein.

Talk of Ampang, and one needs almost no introduction to the delights that this part of Kuala Lumpur stands to offer, especially given its general proximity to the city centre. However, one part of Ampang that is often easily overlooked is the Damai area, which sits just off Jalan Ampang. While Uthant has already gained a sizeable repute for prime real estate offerings and some fantastic restaurants, Damai remains relatively subdued by comparison, notable for only one eminent Chinese primary school and the Raffles Malaysian campus nestled among residential homes.
That’s assuming of course that you don’t know where to look, as some of these residential homes from amid the leafy foliage of this quiet suburbia have since been converted into cafes, serving all manner of bakes and plates for those who stumble upon them. One such establishment can be found in Wholey Wonder, a health-driven restaurant that is heavily inspired by a plant-based East Asian inflexion. And there’s no better place to do so than amind the lush verdancy that the restaurant owners have so lovingly cultivated, set against a dramatic backdrop of the city’s most recognisable skyscrapers.
We mentioned healthy, but that does not come with any compromises in flavour. 10-year-aged Hokkaido organic miso ensures that their ramen bowls are sufficiently robust in taste, while Korean kimbap rice bowls are served with a kaleidoscopic medley of freshly julienned greens, accompanied by tempeh cutlets for added crunch and substance. Beyond hot meals, light bites such as sushi rolls with a tropical twist featuring sweet mango and Nyonya acar are also available to order here.

While we’re not claiming that it’s all the same, those who are hankering for just a slice of the experience are more than welcome to make a brief stop in Desa Sri Hartamas and seek out Picnic by Lynn Saub. Exclusively open over the weekends bright and early from 8am to 2pm in the afternoon, this al fresco dining experience was founded by namesake proprietor, Lynn, who decided to welcome guests into her backyard with a selection of baked goods and hot meals, all of which are lovingly prepared in her own kitchen.
Menu offerings here run the gamut of Southeast Asian dishes, from bowls of Indonesian bakso meat balls, to soto ayam noodles with potato fritters. It is by no means fancy, but the charm lies in its family-centric, community-first approach, welcoming diners of all creeds to settle down and take the time to smell the proverbial roses. Better still, if you’d like to take some of Lynn’s bites home with you, she even has her own range of homemade cookies available for sale.

One can never have e’Nuff Coffee’. Presenting Nuff Coffee, also known as a ‘kedai kopi & kolok’, this petite new cafe packs a punch with its robust flavours and massive heart. The cafe’s interior, with its warm hues and wooden accents, draws inspiration from its co-founder’s roots in Pahang, with additional influences from North Jakarta’s Rumahan Coffee & Kitchen.
Before setting up this establishment, the founders of Nuff used to sell coffee at street stalls in Shah Alam. They bring a unique personal touch to their cafe, creating a genuinely welcoming atmosphere.
Nuff’s coffee bar is stocked with beans sourced from local roasters, while its kitchen specialises in comforting Sarawak delicacies. Their Mee Kolok is exceptional and comes with a selection of Bebek Salai (savory smoked duck) or Sup Tulang (tasty beef bone soup). Their Sarawak Laksa is one of the best in the Klang Valley, brilliantly balancing rich flavours.

Belly & Mel
Belly & Mel is proof that two is always better than one, a recent addition to Mont Kiara, it is a collaborative venture that merges two popular cafe brands for the first time, integrating elements from both the Belly and Mel F&B families.
The menu showcases inspirations from both entities, with dishes such as Belly’s Oceanic Blast Pasta, which draws influence from fish head noodles, and Mel’s Ebi Nori Prawn Ceviche Taco, making it a fantastic destination for fans of both brands.
Asian touches add an unexpected twist to the menu, offering a range of dishes from Duck Confit with a hint of Szechuan spice served with Risotto, to Grilled Sea Bass coupled with Century Egg Chilli Ragu. Even their take on the classic Carbonara is unique, with the addition of fermented beancurd.
Their drink offerings echo this innovative approach – the Camelia Yin Yong (a layered concoction of oolong tea, coffee, and milk) and Kumquat Suan Mei Tang (a salty-sour drink with Mandarin plum) are perfect for a relaxed weekend drink.

Breizh
Breizh, a recently opened creperie in Damansara Kim, offers a modern take on crepes inspired by the region of Brittany in France. They use organic French buckwheat flour for their gluten-free Galettes and T55 French flour for their crepes, ensuring that their offerings are as authentic as possible.
Their savoury Galettes could serve as a substantial meal. For a brunch experience that straddles multiple continents, try their Sunny-Side-Up Galette with Salame Milano and Emmental cheese. It offers a delightful combination of cold cuts and cheese, all topped with an oeuf au miroir that oozes beautifully over the hearty, earthy galette.
The Saint Jacques is a unique dish that wouldn’t be out of place in a Parisian brasserie. It features seared scallops and juicy pork bacon, enriched with a leek fondue that adds a creamy touch of caramelisation.
On the sweet side, their Mont Blanc-inspired treat is an interesting option. Topped with vermicelli made from chestnut puree, it hides a centre of vanilla ice cream and is finished off with a sugared chestnut. It’s like enjoying Christmas in April.
Their Tiramisu crepe brings together French and Italian culinary traditions. The crepe is stuffed with espresso-sprinkled mascarpone, creating a freshly soothing twist on familiar flavours.
They also offer other dessert options like Speculoos with Pecans, Cinnamon-Stewed Apples with House-Whipped Cream, and the classic Citron Sucre with Lemon, Butter and Sugar.

Tzuka Cafe & Bistro, with its lush, garden-like setting, is a highly favoured destination in The Gardens Mall. After a fascinating journey through mirrored walkways, one can discover Tzuka within Toy Eight. The cafe offers a tempting array of creative and comforting dishes, ranging from Beef Bacon Baked Eggs to Salmon Chazuke, Creamy Shoyu Unagi Pasta, Ayam Sambal Balinese, and the delightful Jiggly Cat Pudding.
It’s worth noting that Tzuka offers a variety of promotions throughout the day. Coffee lovers can enjoy two long blacks for RM10 every day from 10 AM to 11 AM. During lunch on weekdays, from 11 AM to 2 PM, a free passionfruit tea and vanilla soft serve are offered with any rice meal order. For tea time only weekdays, from 2 PM to 6 PM, there’s a 26% discount on all pastries with any coffee purchase. Artisan Roast Coffee
Artisan Roast and Seniman Kakao have returned to TTDI, but this time, they’re sharing a stunning cafe-roastery space in the Datuk Sulaiman neighborhood. The venue is an inviting blend of rustic brick and wood tones, bathed in the morning sunlight.
Artisan Roast’s Blackbird Blend makes for an exceptional white coffee, and Seniman Kakao’s chocolate drinks, particularly the one infused with rose and black pepper, are worth a try. The cafe uses cocoa from Perak, Johor, and Kedah farms to create sweet treats like soft chocolate tarts and the Kuala Mu 72% bar, which strikes a perfect balance between sweet and sour. Rumour has it that they’re planning to offer chocolate gelato, pastries, and sandwiches soon.
In a nod to the process of chocolate making, a live cocoa tree will be planted in the cafe later this month. Chocolate workshops are also in the works. This new incarnation of Artisan Roast and Seniman Kakao is a significant step forward for both brands, carrying them into the next decade and beyond. They’ve retained some of the old furniture from the previous Artisan Roast, giving it a new lease of life in the updated space.

With friendly faces that might ring a bell, the team behind Pucks Coffee are the same masterminds who launched Whatever Works Coffee and Coffeenies in Keramat. The intriguing name, Pucks, stands for People United by Coffee & Kooky Souls, reflecting their aspiration to transform the cafe into a communal hub. They even envision introducing a camera film processing lab within their space.
The interior of Pucks Coffee, an homage to the creative workspace of Metahaiku studio in Los Angeles, is an eclectic blend of thrift store finds, crafting an atmosphere of welcoming warmth and creative energy.
