#LSADrinks: What’s new in the world of ABV this July 2024?

It’s #LSADrinks time! Wondering what’s new in the world of all things ABV? This month includes Jameson, Penfolds and more.

The July 2024 edition of #LSADrinks continues to take a look at the most exciting events and launches happening in Malaysia and beyond. Whether it’s the tasting of the Penfolds Bin 707 or the Jameson REWIND House Party, there’s just so much to look forward to in the world of ABV. Keep reading to find out what’s new this month!

Here’s what happened at the Jameson REWIND House Party

The Jameson REWIND House Party — held on 22 June — saw 800 guests experiencing a throwback adventure like no other. At The Godown, Jameson brought together some of Malaysia’s favourite musicians, mixologists and brands; from CLAUDIA, Lost Spaces, Saint Kylo, EMO NIGHT KL and TY:DEL to Hundred Percent, The Underrated Barbershop, The Goodfellas Kitchen and My BurgerLab. At the Living Room, guests enjoyed amazing music while sipping on cocktails made by Triptyk’s Angel Ng, including the ‘Asam Boy’. One floor up, you have the The Attic or The Black Barrel Room. Here, DJs Misty, MJ and Reeve entertained the crowd alongside Jameson Black Barrel concoctions.

Before the fun party began, Jameson hosted the Jameson REWIND Cocktail Challenge Finals — where mixologists had to create a nostalgia-themed drink. The winners, Priya Dharrsini and Justin from Good Friends Club in Penang, were chosen out of five finalists and will be heading to Midleton Distillery for the Jameson HOSTS Global Summit later this year. Fun times indeed!

All about the Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon

The other day, we had the pleasure of experiencing a vertical tasting session of the Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon at Shu KL — hosted by Brand Ambassador Joshua Yim. Together with a delightful menu curated by Chef Chin Wong, we toast to 60 years of the Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon – first introduced by Max Schubert in 1964. Our session comprised the Bin 707 from 2018, 2006 and 1992 – crafted with a multi-regional blend from the likes of Barossa Valley, Coonawarra and McLaren Vale.

The wine is characterised by its intense and layered flavours, with many considering it almost similar to the Grange. It is named after the Boeing 707 jet airliner and in the 1960s, was served to passengers in Qantas First Class. One of the most beloved wines across the world, the Penfolds Bin 707 is lush on the palate and has a deep multi-dimensional colour. Its firm body makes it a perfect pairing to go with dishes created for the session such as Pork Jowl with Lap Cheong Sauce, Hamachi with Fish Bone Soy and Drunken Akaebi with Huadiao Butter.

Belvedere 10 is the luxury vodka you need to know

Belvedere, a household name in the spirits world, is upping the ante on luxury vodka with the launch of Belvedere 10! Now available in Malaysia, the liquid is housed in a sleek all-white bottle that pays homage to the organic Diamond Rye found on a farm in Poland’s Masurian Lake District. From selecting the Dankowskie Diamond rye and gentle heating to being distilled four times and bottling at 40% ABV, Belvedere 10’s ten-step process has created an opulent vodka with notes of dark cacao and nutty praline.

To celebrate the launch, Belvedere is collaborating with Bar Trigona (in Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur) on a one-of-a-kind cocktail that personifies the luxury vodka. Created by renowned mixologist Rohan Matmary, ‘The Elysian’ – available from 1 August 2024 – is an elegant and balanced reimagining of the dirty martini with Tropical Oscietra, Premier Cru Chablis and Himalayan salt crystal.

Ellen Xu wins Woodford Reserve’s first ever The Wonderful Race

In last month’s edition of #LSADrinks, we mentioned a little about Woodford Reserve’s inaugural The Wonderful Race competition — and its five finalists from the region. They included Malaysia’s Yung Shen Koh as well as China’s Ellen Xu, Singapore’s Raz Ng, Thailand’s Kornnaran Mingsamdang and South Korea’s In Kyu Hwang. On 7 June, the competition was held at the Woodford Reserve Home Place in Kentucky and saw Ellen Xu from China taking the top spot. Xu’s first cocktail was ‘Five Blessing’, comprising the Barrel Aged Sticky Rice Leaf Vermouth. Up next, she presented ‘Reborn’, a libation made with osmanthus black tea and locally sourced spices. Her final cocktail, ‘Bourbon Pour Over’, was crafted using coffee cocoa bitters, Tangbai Baijiu and coconut-infused Campari.

On her win, she said: “From California to Hangzhou and now back in Kentucky, it’s all about finding balance through storytelling. It’s like a circle of life. I am beyond honoured to be part of the big Woodford Reserve community, where I met many friends along the way, the stories we share and inspire one another. So, a very big thank you to Woodford Reserve for making this happen”. Congratulations on the win, Ellen!

Tasting Hennessy Master Blender’s Selection No 5 with Renaud Fillioux de Gironde

We had the pleasure of meeting Renaud Fillioux de Gironde, 8th Generation Master Blender at Hennessy, during an intimate cognac tasting session at The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur. Featuring the limited edition Master Blender’s Selection No 5, the first release in three years, the blend is an elegant amalgamation of the work of 18 exceptional distillers with the eaux-de-vie chosen by Renaud himself. Bottled at 43% ABV, the one-of-a-kind cognac can be enjoyed neat, with ice and in the form of a cocktail — enhanced by notes of candied orange, sweet spices and cocoa. This is the fifth Master Blender’s Selection with the first being unveiled in 2016; housed in a sleek bourbon-inspired case. During the tasting session, the cognac was paired with canapes such as Beetroot Salmon and Crispy Air Banquettes as well as Lobster with Granny Smith Apple and Oscietra Caviar. There is only a limited amount of the Hennessy Master Blender’s Selection No 5 and can be found at selected retailers throughout Malaysia.
