Ever since its announcement by CD Projekt Red, the anticipation for The Witcher 4 game has been steadily growing. This is, in no small part, thanks to the excellent work the developer did with fixing Cyberpunk 2077. As new details slowly emerge, excitement builds around what promises to be an epic continuation of The Witcher saga.
The Witcher video game series, which started in 2007, has grown to become one of the most celebrated role-playing game (RPG) franchises in gaming history. The latest instalment, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015), set a high standard for storytelling, open-world design, and gameplay; yet another reason for fans to have high hopes for the sequel.
The Witcher 4 was announced to be in development back in 2022 and the developers have given it the code name Polaris. Besides that, a remake of the first game is also in development at CD Projekt Red.
As we eagerly await these releases, let’s discuss what we know about The Witcher 4 game’s main character, setting and potential gameplay changes.
‘The Witcher 4’ will take the long-running video game franchise in a new direction
While most details about the new game are under wraps, fans expect CD Projekt Red to explore new regions of The Witcher universe, potentially introducing fresh characters and narratives.
Those looking to explore these new worlds with their favourite Witcher in this new game might be disappointed too, as there are rumours of it featuring a completely new character. While fans might not like this new direction, it makes sense, as Geralt’s story was pretty much over in The Witcher 3.
‘The Witcher 4’ gameplay and graphics
While the prospect of playing as a new Witcher in the new game may not appeal to most fans initially, they would be excited to know that The Witcher 4 or Polaris will be a visually stunning game.
CD Projekt Red has finally left their popular yet performance-hogging REDengine behind in favour of Unreal Engine 5 for this new title.
We are also expecting its gameplay to be very different from its predecessors. CD Projekt Red has learned a lot from the development of Cyberpunk 2077 and the PS5 and Xbox Series ports of The Witcher 3.
They would implement those new ideas into this new title. Maybe they will take inspiration for The Witcher 4’s gameplay from games like the new God of War titles? They can make it faster and more combo-based, or maybe they would lean more towards Soulslike games, much like Elden Ring.
Whatever they do, it will be an incredible showcase, both in terms of visuals and gameplay mechanics.
‘The Witcher’ sequel release date and platforms
Developer CD Projekt Red has not revealed any information about the release date of their upcoming The Witcher games, but one thing is for sure: fans better not add Witcher 4 to their list of most anticipated games coming in 2025.
It will be released much later, as CD Projekt Red loves taking its time to develop these titles. Just look at Cyberpunk 2077; the game was announced in 2012, was released in 2020 and was finished only recently.
