Jelajah – Heritage Nature Park at Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Cemetery. 13 August till 10 September 2022.

Located in one of the oldest cemeteries in Malaysia, the exhibition is an opportunity for every art enthusiast to discover the historical landmark of early Chinese settlements. The project is curated by Lostgens Artspace and features nine homegrown artists and art collectives: Ahlan, Atelier BT 11, David Wong, Emily Chow, Fiqtriey Haqimiey, Poodien, Hishamuddin Rais, Sun Kang Jye with Matt Gan Sian Wei and Sun Chen Shuen, and lastly, Rat Heist.

As quoted by The Star, “We don’t want the public to think of the cemetery as belonging to just the Hokkien community. It is part of KL’s history and heritage. It belongs to everyone. People need to realise that. The cemetery’s preservation is a shared responsibility. We knew we needed to do something to raise public awareness about preserving this cemetery. One way to let people know that this is a place of heritage, history and a natural ecological park is through this exhibition at a cemetery. I don’t think this has been done before,” explains curator Yeoh Lian Heng.”

According to Lostgens, each artwork is made to connect the artist and the chosen location. Before entering, grab an art trail map at the cemetery’s office. We look forward to seeing Rat-Heist’s sunflower installation as it is a celebration of life and a tribute to lost loved ones. Apart from that, Emily Chow’s 1,000 paper bird installation is a way to communicate with deceased loved ones, especially during the Qing Ming Festival.
