Twilight, REXPERIENCE @ REXKL

Beyond the weekly round of events that you can always count on REXKL to host, one of the more notable permanent attractions that you shouldn’t miss out on is REXPERIENCE. Between gigs, the main cinema space of REXKL has been converted to host a fully immersive projection-mapped experience which changes every few months. This time around, be prepared to enjoy the trappings of its latest marvel, entitled Twilight, which has been billed as a convergence of time and emotion through art.

Metaphorical Cards, Perspectives in Art and Therapy @ HARTA SPACE

In conjunction with their ongoing Dog Days exhibition by local artist Ping, HARTA SPACE will also be hosting their very first programme entitled Metaphorical Cards, Perspectives in Art and Therapy, led by Mimie Rahman, the managing director of MINDAKAMI. During this sharing session, participants will learn about the intricacies surrounding ‘metaphorical cards’, a tool that she often uses in her sessions to facilitate communication, self-expression, and exploration of emotions, thoughts, and experiences.

Big Bake World @ The Starhill Kuala Lumpur

Have a sweet tooth that begs to be sated? You’re in luck, as one of the largest bake sales in the city is expected to be held outside Starhill Kuala Lumpur from the 8th to 11th of August. Jointly organised by Pingmin Market, Balmuda, and Kitchenaid, the event is expected to attract a host of industry talents both locally and regionally to show off their craft. Of course, you’re going to need a cup of Joe to go with your baked delights, and thankfully this event will also bring in a host of coffee vendors.

Reggae Market @ REXKL

Originating in Jamaica, reggae is arguably the country’s most prominent cultural export, bolstered by Bob Marley’s omnipresent influence in the global consciousness even to this day. If you count yourself as a die-hard fan, you’ll definitely want to set some time aside between the 9th to 11th of August to check out REXKL’s Reggae Market pop-up. Music will be at the fore of course, with DJs taking the decks across the day, but you’ll also find plenty to see, nibble, sip, and shop, as you make your way across this storied Kuala Lumpur landmark.

Inferno @ Triptyk

With its meteoric rise in the 1980s from both sides of the Coast in America, hip-hop’s influence in steering the trajectory of modern culture needs no further repeating. Celebrate its many guises at Triptyk on 3rd August for one night only, as the Inferno Hip-Hop block party is prepared to serve an education of the genre’s many derivatives, from old-school classics to Chiese Rap and Opium Trap. You can even expect a live performance from Rapkeys.

Dog Days @ HARTA SPACE

Man’s oldest and most loyal friend on four legs, our relationship with canines spans across centuries back to the earliest days of human civilisation. And it is through the steadfast companionship of his pet pup, Ampersand, that local artist Ping came to bring his latest exhibit, Dog Days, to life. Supported by HARTA SPACE and curated by Studio Sayang, the exhibition aims to loosen the stigmas surrounding mental health through his depiction of depression through his dog.

Bon Odori @ LalaPort BBCC

A celebration of cultural exchange and unity between the Japanese expatriate community and Malaysian locals, the Bon Odori Festival is easily one of the most highly anticipated events for fans of all things Nippon. Beyond all manner of stalwart Japanese fare that your tummy can handle and plenty of vendors to shop all your favourite crafts and trinkets, expect a host of other activities such as Bon Odori drum dances as well as an exclusive performance by JPOP supergroup AKB48 spread out across two weekends.

COLLAPSE by Gabriel Cheah @ HARTA Space

From 4 to 27 July, KolmeGlu and HARTA presents COLLAPSE by Gabriel Cheah. Gabriel, an up-and-coming artist specialising in ceramics, crystal, and contemporary sculpture, aims to immerse visitors in a serene, post-apocalyptic world through his art. His work emphasises balance and harmony, with each sculptural piece meticulously crafted by hand. The installation features European crystals that radiate positive energy, embodying key elements of his artistic practice such as colour, rhythm, and texture. Gabriel aspires to establish himself as a ‘happy artist’ through this exhibit.

Happy Pets Carnival @ Jaya One

Throughout July, The Square by Jaya One will host Malaysia’s inaugural Happy Pets Carnival in collaboration with Ollie & Hana Puppy Nursery. This event celebrates The Square’s six-year commitment to being a pet-friendly venue and expresses gratitude to the community for their support.

Zhang Xu Zhan: Jungle Jungle @ Ilham Gallery

Providing a unique, explorative look into Asian folklore and handicrafts, Taiwanese artist Zhang Xu Zhan will be staging his debut exhibition local shores at the Ilham Gallery. Open to the public from now to 6th October 2024, it will chiefly feature his Golden Horse Award-winning animated short film, ‘Compound Eyes of Tropical.’ Primarily inspired by his time in Indonesia, the production is primarily centered around the folklore tale of ‘Sang Kancil and the Crocodiles,’ while intermingling influences from similar fables such as ‘The Mouse and the Buffalo’ from Zhan’s native Taiwan, and China’s ‘The Rabbit and the Crab.’

For just a single day, some of the city’s most renowned creative forces will be converging for a day of music, live entertainment, crafts, and retail therapy. This even includes an array of unique workshops, such as box photography, palette portrait painting, and classes on weaving. For 27 years, photographer Dju-lian Chng has made it his life’s passion to capture static glimpses of metropolitan machines in motion. Flowww is an initiative by key figures from various parts of KL’s music scene, with the goal of challenging and redefining traditional conceptions of live music (also known as jam sessions). Life Drawing Workshop @ Temu House

The exhibit will showcase a range of chameleonic ceramic pieces crafted using the raku technique, whereby each design is removed from a kiln at red-hot temperatures before being coated in a combustible material used to starve the glaze of oxygen, thereby creating a brilliant smattering of colour.

The Gaze of Sleepwalkers

Marking H.H. Lim’s return to Malaysia after a decade of absence from the local art scene, The Gaze of Sleepwalkers is set to be exhibited at the Wei-Ling Gallery come January 27th. Comprised of 13 paintings and installation pieces, the collection aims to draw parallels between the human condition with the world we inhabit at large, where animals play the role of silent observers to humanity’s present state of being as oblivious ‘sleepwalkers’.

Tagging Temu

The term ‘tagging’ in casual parlance refers to the use of spray paint to create decorative designs on public spaces, alluding to how an artist has ‘tagged’ the location with their work. Given how prevalent graffiti art is in any major city, there’s no better way to experience Kuala Lumpur’s grafitti art scene than to visit the Tagging Temu exhibit. Held at Temu House, expect to witness the finesse of art heavyweights including Red Hong Yi, Ernest Zacharevic, Sliz, Drewfunk, and more in person.

Zainalabidin Sound Spirit Concert
