Good Vibes Festival 2024 cancelled to honour Sultan Ibrahim’s coronation

Good Vibes Festival 2024 has officially been cancelled to avoid clashing with the coronation ceremony of Sultan Ibrahim, which is set to take place on 20 July. This announcement has left many fans disappointed, as the festival was poised to be one of the most exciting events for Malaysian music lovers this year. The lineup included global artists like Peggy Gou, Joji, Russ, J Balvin, BIBI, and more, who were expected to deliver unforgettable performances.

After last year’s controversy involving the English pop rock band The 1975, there was a great deal of skepticism when the festival’s return was announced for July. Despite the initial excitement and anticipation, this year’s event has been called off, leading to another wave of disappointment among fans who had hoped for a seamless return.

Originally scheduled to run over two days at Resort World Awana in Genting Highlands, the festival was set to kick off on 20 July. However, in a recent statement released on Instagram, the festival organisers informed concert-goers of the cancellation due to the overlap with Sultan Ibrahim’s coronation ceremony. The statement highlighted the importance of respecting this significant national event.

According to a letter from the authorities dated 27 June, large-scale performances featuring international artists are not permitted on 20 July. This directive was issued out of respect for the coronation of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia. The authorities emphasised the significance of the coronation and the need to maintain the decorum of the day.

The organisers explained in their statement that rescheduling the festival was not a viable option. Given the nature of Good Vibes Festival, which involves multiple touring acts over multiple days, coordinating a new date would be logistically challenging. As a result, Future Sound Asia, the festival’s organising body, decided to cancel the event altogether.

The statement read: “Due to the nature of Good Vibes Festival which involves multiple touring acts over multiple days, rescheduling the festival is not possible. As a result, Future Sound Asia is announcing the cancellation of the festival, originally scheduled for 20 and 21 July. All ticket purchasers for Good Vibes Festival will automatically receive full refunds to the payment method used for their purchase.”

For many, the cancellation of Good Vibes Festival 2024 is a significant letdown, especially after the turbulent events of the previous year. However, the decision underscores the respect and reverence held for Sultan Ibrahim’s coronation ceremony, a pivotal moment in Malaysia’s history. Fans who purchased tickets will receive full refunds, providing some consolation amid the disappointment.

The organisers expressed their regret over the cancellation and acknowledged the support and understanding of the fans. They also reiterated their commitment to bringing the festival back in the future, promising an even better experience for music lovers when the time is right.
