Malaysia raises airport fees; passengers to pay up to RM 73 more

Flying through Malaysia’s airports is about to get pricier! The government has decided to raise the passenger service charges (PSC) across all airports as part of efforts to revive the aviation sector from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. This move will see Malaysia’s airport charges soar by up to RM 73, resulting in increased flight ticket costs.

Passenger service charges are levied on each traveller at airports to cover security and maintenance expenses. Both domestic and international passengers passing through Malaysian airports, including Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi, will be subject to these heightened charges until 2026.

The Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) has disclosed that the PSC will range from RM 7 to RM 73, effective from June 1, 2024, until December 31, 2026. Flight tickets purchased before June 1, 2024, will not be subject to this raised fee. Previously, international travel within ASEAN and beyond incurred separate PSC, but the revised Malaysia Airport charges have standardised them. While airports previously did not charge a separate fee for transfers, this has changed with transfer PSC now ranging from RM 7 to RM 42. These adjusted charges apply exclusively to airports managed by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad.

Breakdown of the passenger service charges expected across different airports:

  • Domestic departure: RM 11; transfer: RM 7 (applicable to all airports)
  • International travel through Kuala Lumpur International Airport 1: departure PSC RM 73; transfer PSC RM 42
  • International travel through Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 and other airports: departure PSC RM 50; transfer PSC RM 29
  • Senai International Airport charges separately: domestic departure PSC RM 16; transfer PSC RM 1; international departure PSC RM 50; transfer PSC RM 29.
