Breaking down the UEFA Champions League 2023-24 prize money for the winners

At the end of a riveting 2023-24 domestic football season, it all boils down to an epic clash in the UEFA Champions League final. Considered to be the grandest stage in European club football, this year’s summit clash will see two juggernauts going head-to-head against each other.

Before we deep dive into the tournament, however, here are the important details about the UEFA Champions League final:

  • Date: 1 June
  • Venue: London, England

Despite the final being held in the country’s capital, no English team will partake in the match. Therefore, fans won’t have a home team to root for, though that will hardly stop supporters from thronging the stadium in large numbers. After all, it is a momentous occasion.

Real Madrid, the newly-crowned La Liga champions, will be taking the field as the overwhelming favourites. The Galacticos will also want to make it a memorable final outing for their legendary midfielder Toni Kroos who will retire once the 2023-24 season draws to a close.

If farewell is the name of the game, Borussia Dortmund are not far behind. The team played its last UEFA Champions League final in 2013 at the same venue, though they ended up on the losing side that evening. Marco Reus, who was a part of that Dortmund squad 11 years back, will look to overturn the outcome in what will be his last appearance for the German side. Unfortunately, only one of these superstars will get his fairytale ending with the trophy in hand.

Additionally, it is not just the silverware that the teams are interested in. As it happens, the tournament comes with one of the biggest purses in domestic football around the globe. Precisely how large is that purse, you wonder? To find out, scroll on as we take a closer look at the UEFA Champions League 2023-24 prize money, as well as the schedule and venue for the final and where you can live stream it.

The history of the UEFA Champions League

Founded in 1955, the UEFA Champions League is the most prestigious club football tournament in Europe, and possibly the world. It was initially called the European Cup and was rebranded to its current iteration in 1992.

To the victors, the UEFA Champions League offers more than its glittering silver trophy and the impressive prize money — it acts as a qualifier for other tournaments, too. Every year, the winners of the Champions League qualify for the UEFA Super Cup where they take on the champions of the UEFA Europa League. In addition, the Champions League winners book a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Spanish clubs have enjoyed the most success in the UEFA Champions League with 19 titles, followed by English teams with 12 wins. When it comes to countries, England boasts the highest number of Champions League-winning clubs with six.

Real Madrid, winners of the inaugural edition, are the most successful team in the history of the UEFA Champions League with 14 titles. AC Milan ranks second on the list with seven trophies, which underlines the Madrid-based side’s dominance in the continental competition over the years.

Meanwhile, Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo holds the record for the most goals in the competition’s history (140). Lionel Messi holds the second spot, trailing Ronaldo by 11 goals.
