Here’s where you can find the best pizzas in Hong Kong, according to locals

There are a few things that come to mind when people talk about food in Hong Kong: delectably tender bites of roast goose, baskets of dimsum, or seafood by the shores of Lanma Island. But if your penchant leans towards Italian slices of heaven, here is where you can find some of the best pizzas in Hong Kong, as claimed by locals.

Pizza making is an art taken seriously and perfected by chefs from Italy and worldwide, thanks to years of experimenting, rolling, and tossing. The classic dish is perfect for those rainy days and movie nights. It’s also great for big get-togethers and celebrations. Luckily, this city gets a piece of that expertise and serves up some exceptional slices. Whether you’re after a deep dish, crispy thin crust, or more exotic toppings, these truly amazing pizza spots in the city won’t disappoint you!

While chains like Pizza Hut and Pizza Box are available in most neighbourhoods, plenty of spots do it truly right (by that, we mean artisanal pizzas). So, for days when nothing but a slice of heaven will do, check out the best places in Hong Kong for your pizza fix. They are all finger-licking delicious.

Warning: The places listed here can be addictive.

Motorino

For a hearty, moreish, hands-on pizza experience, it doesn’t get any better than Motorino. With two branches, one in Soho and the other in Wan Chai, Motorino is one of the most popular pizzeria chains in New York and serves fresh, made-to-order Neopolitan-style pizzas. Each slice features its signature crispy and puffy outer edge. Our favourites include their legendary Brussels Sprouts pizza with fior di latte, garlic, pecorino, smoked pancetta and olive oil. We also swear by the fiery Soppressata Piccante pizza with tomato sauce, fior di latte, spicy soppressata, fresh chillies, garlic, oregano, pecorino and olive oil.

Must-try flavours: Soppressata Piccante, La Stella, Brussels Sprouts, Tonno & Cipolle

Falcone

The one (almost) everyone is raving about for its pricey doughs: Falcone. This pizzeria is inspired by the chaos and beauty of travelling through Napoli and yet its menu is simple and uncomplicated. Plus, Naples is where it all started for pizzas so it can’t get any better than this. Dig into the neo-Neapolitan style of pizza (and pasta) and prepare to crunch into the thick, fluffy crusts. Despite the traditional 25-30 cm size, don’t let it fool you—it’s filling. Among what’s available, we recommend the Diavola with tomato, fior di latte, and salami as well as the Alici Fung complete with tomato, anchovy, black olives, and oregano topping.

Must-try flavours: Spinaci e Provola, Porchetta e Pravola, Alici Fung

Alice Pizza

Alice Pizza only debuted in Hong Kong in 2023 but it’s already caused quite a stir for its rectangular pan-baked sleeves. The Roman pan (teglia) pizza joint also recently opened up its flagship store in Central. Its popularity is accounted for having sold over 6.5 million kilograms of pizza worldwide… so far. With roots in Rome, it champions the concept of ‘al taglio’ (by the cut) making it easier for pizza fanatics to try all kinds of flavours without having to order an entire box of each. Or they can, if they please and have the room for it. The menu has two dozen offerings with the Central branch boasting special options. Some may call the Nutella Pizza an abomination, but it’s a perfect pick for those with a sweet tooth. Otherwise, stick to the basics with traditional Italian choices instead of vegan and vegetarian ones.

Must-try flavours: Salsiccia and Porcini, Parma, Nutella Pizza, Gamberetti

Vesu Pizza Bar

Pizza with a view, anyone? Welcome to Vesu Pizza Bar, the affordable pizza eatery from Aqua Restaurant Group. Compared to its other more lavish restaurants, Vesu Pizza Bar is funky and takes on a retro-inspired twist on traditional Italian culture and cuisine. That’s evident in its pizza flavours. For instance, The Ducky uses Peking Duck while I’ll Be Bok has bok choi cream. The Kai Lan and Sausage is a local spin on the Naples’ salsiccia e friarielli. Another aspect of the pizza we love? The thin dough and crust. You won’t get full too fast and still have plenty of room for another round. If you’re not up for the creative flavours, there’s always the traditional Neapolitan pizzas. You can even see the creation process from the open kitchen countertop. Other than the pizza, the restaurant also has curated sips. Vesu Pizza Bar is also an affordable option for lunch or a post-work drink affair.

Must-try flavours: The Ducky, I’ll Be Bok, Vulcan

Little Napoli

As its name suggests, another Neapolitan pizza place makes our list. We love how Little Napoli takes true to the chef’s hometown traditions. So, diners can expect classic Neapolitan pizzas as well as street foods made with ingredients straight from Naples. There are plenty to choose from but the signatures like Margherita and Vesuviana are made to order, ensuring diners get to try that smoking freshness. The charred crust is an added plus. Oh, did we mention that this Happy Valley staple has earned a well-deserved Bib Gourmand recognition?

Dough Bros

Any discussion on pizza isn’t complete without mentioning neighbourhood favourite, Dough Bros. Known for their pizzas as much as their doughnuts, what followers of this cult brand swear by is the high-quality sourdough pizza. The menu is a little more creative here. On one hand, you have classics like pepperoni and on the other, there are signatures like including chorizo sausage and beef meatballs.

Amalfitana

Whisk yourselves away to the sunkissed Amalfi coast with Amalfitana. The Central outpost is perfect for the social crowd while the Repulse Bay branch suits the laidback dwellers. Dig into the slices of mouthwatering Napolitani-style pizza. A thin pizza crust is the game here with a perfectly charred edge. All are served hot straight from the wood-fired oven, just as it should be. We recommend folding the pizza in half for extra finger-licking goodness. Plus, Amalfitana ensures that the generous toppings don’t fall off. And don’t be shy, order some starters, pasta, and the equally amazing tiramisu to go with the artisanal pizza.

Must-try flavours: Primavera, Regina, Tartufo

The Cipollini Pizzeria

The Cipollini Pizzeria offers an ode to Italy’s rich culinary heritage with dishes that appeal to all ages and tastebuds. Indulge in the range of antipasti, pasta, and gelatos, on top of homemade pizzas. The star of this neighbourhood abode, the homemade Romano Al Taglio pizzas feel awfully reminiscent of a traditional Italian family kitchen is. They are available in 100-gram slices allowing diners to savour different flavours in a single meal. Yes, that includes solo diners. No pressure on having to finish an entire pizza on your own. Plus, the pizza is a spectacle on its own with toppings such as truffle and wagyu stripes available.

Fiata

Fiata took fifth place in the Top 50 Pizzas Awards for Asia-Pacific and ranked first for Hong Kong. So, it only feels right to have it on the list. This award-winning pizzeria is run by Salvatoria Fiata, who hails from Caserta in Italy. He specialises in Italian handmade pizzas, using the freshest ingredients from his home country. The pizza is cooked in high heat for a precise minute and a half. The result? A crisp crust with a charred yet fluffy centre. It’s no wonder pizza lovers keep coming back.

The Pizza Project

With a name that includes pizza and helmed by the same team as Pici, you can’t go wrong with The Pizza Project. Billed as the pizza alternative to Pici, you can expect fair-priced yet quality pizza in his 1970s-style pizzeria. The no-fuss, one-page menu also makes it easier for diners, especially picky eaters. For some, sticking to classics might come off as playing it safe but if you do it well, there’s nothing wrong with classics. The Pizza Project knows how to appeal to their Margherita, but the Nduja is also worth a try.

Sonny’s Pizza

So far we’ve only introduced Italian pizzas so it’s time for some equally delicious New York pizza courtesy of Sonny’s. This Singapore-based pizza restaurant set up shop in Hong Kong recently, which is also its first overseas location. While only a takeaway shop, it makes for a great grab-n-go option for busy Hongkongers. Sample pizzas by the slice or purchase an entire 12-inch or 16-inch pizza. Besides, Sonny’s operates until quite late, especially on Fridays and Saturdays for the city’s night owl. This is not surprising considering that chefs Son Pham and Shakib Pasha envisioned Sonny’s to be a nice late-night pizza option when they themselves couldn’t find one. Still, Sonny’s is amazing for a quick lunch, pick-me-up in the afternoon, or even for a fun dinner with friends and family.
