If your checklist for a good restaurant consists of wok hei and a generous sprinkle of MSG, then you’re in luck. The king of culinary rebuttals Uncle Roger, second only to Chef Gordon Ramsay, is apparently prepared to open his very-first restaurant in Malaysia!
Malaysian-born-and-raised comic sensation Nigel Ng, whose global fame can be attributed to his no-holds-barred, candid Manglish-speaking Uncle Roger character, made the surprise announcement through a recent video that debuted on his socials on July 1st as an ode to the late chef and food writer, Anthony Bourdain, and his visit to Penang back in 2012 as part of his hit series, Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations.
Uncle Roger aka Nigel Ng hints at opening his first restaurant in Malaysia
While keeping details to a minimum, he took the opportunity to mention in passing that he is anticipating opening his very own restaurant on local shores, which has long maintained a fearsome reputation in Southeast Asia for being a food haven for intrepid travellers. “Uncle Roger is actually going to open my very first restaurant over there,” he said.
This also refutes popular rumour that Ng’s name had already been associated with two restaurants in the Klang Valley, one in SS2 and another in Sunway Giza. As to what this new venture is expected to deliver, the famed comic has decided to keep mum, leaving fans to speculate on the nature of the menu’s potential offerings.
With that said, you won’t have to wait for a brick-and-mortar outlet for a taste of Uncle Roger’s cooking, as Ng already maintains an online storefront which offers Uncle Roger’s Chili Crab Pasta for sale. Available in limited quantities through a collaboration with American Chinese food suppliers MiLa, the pasta kit comes with two bundles of bucatini pasta, in addition to two packets of a lusciously rich sauce available in either medium or hot levels of spice.
If you have a truly brave palate, enjoy it with a packet of the company’s very own XXX-hot chili oil, made out of searing hot Carolina Reaper chilis that are sure to leave a lingering sting on your tongue. Priced at $29.99 (RM141.52), the pasta bundle is unfortunately only available in the US for now, to the dismay of Nigel Ng fans who don’t reside stateside.
