Hamilton unveils Ventura watches based on ‘Dune: Part II’ prop that exist beyond Arrakis

Hitting the theatres on 15 March 2024, Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming sci-fi project Dune: Part II has kept moviegoers waiting with bated breath. And when such an epic film has a horological requirement, it turns towards one of the most trusted watchmakers for filmmakers. Hamilton has announced a partnership with Dune: Part II to create a wrist wearable for the Fremen people. While the film prop will not be available on Earth, it has paved the way for two limited-edition Hamilton watches.

Taking cues from the movie wearable, these watches bear the design DNA of Hamilton’s Ventura line and are accentuated with the iconic blue eye colour of the Fremen.

The wrist wearable that Hamilton designed for the upcoming Dune sequel defies the usual features of a timepiece. Dubbed the ‘Desert Watch’, the “uniquely hardwearing Fremen device” is created along with the film’s prop master, Doug Harlocker.

The wrist tool has relief-feature detailing and a blue inner design to go with the characters’ eyes. The unique prop embodies the film’s visual aesthetics and is in line with the setting of Frank Herbert’s Dune novels. However, there is no mention of watches in the literary or cinematic universe of Dune.

The two Hamilton Ventura watches born out of this unique collaboration exude the same outer-space vibe. Christened Hamilton Ventura XXL Bright Dune Limited Edition and the Hamilton Ventura Edge Dune Limited Edition, they feature the line’s characteristic triangular design, which debuted in 1957. The Ventura was also the world’s first electric watch powered by a battery.

Hamilton Ventura XXL Bright Dune Limited Edition is fitted with a 52mm x 46.6mm steel angular case with a black PVD coating and an alluring blue dial. A button on the left glows up the blue lines on the dial, mimicking the Desert Watch design. This limited-edition piece comes with a commemorative packaging inspired by the film.

Only 3,000 pieces are available, priced at GBP 1,585 (around SGD 2,698).

Meanwhile, the Hamilton Ventura Edge Dune Limited Edition measures 51mm x 47.2mm and comes with the same case materials but in a matte finish. This digital watch displays time in Femen blue digits and mirrors the 3D relief elements of the Desert Watch.

Only 2,000 pieces are available that are tagged at GBP 2,250 (around SGD 3,830).

This is not the first time that Hamilton has designed watches for films. Iconic movies like Interstellar (2014), Oppenheimer (2023) and Tenet (2020) have seen the watchmaker’s mastery.
