All about Serendipity’s Embrace, the new romantic K-drama

The newest romantic series on the Kdrama block is a tale of second chances and fate titled Serendipity’s Embrace — with tvN recently revealing details about its cast and release date. Here’s all about it.

South Korean entertainment giant tVN has had quite a successful 2024 — with titles like Lovely Runner and Queen Of Tears clocking in impressive viewership percentages. And while The Auditors continues to garner attention, the television platform has dropped news of its latest Kdrama outing Serendipity’s Embrace — including details of its cast and release date. Based on an eponymous webtoon written by Nam Ji-eun and illustrated by Kim In-ho — the plot sees two young individuals who’ve known each other for a decade reunite and fall in love, reigniting past feelings in the process. Directed by Song Hyun-wook of the King’s Affection and Revolutionary Love fame — the show is set to make July 2024 special. Here’s what we know of it so far.

The plot of the K-drama Serendipity’s Embrace

After a decade, two young individuals accidentally bump into their first love (read each other). In the process, they discover true love and conquer their dreams.

Meet the Kdrama actors who make up the cast of Serendipity’s Embrace

My Lovely Liar and Love Alarm actress Kim So-hyun steps into the shoes of animation producer Lee Hong-joo. As a young girl, her character was open, impulsive, and rather mischievous — writing love letters to her crush and approaching him boldly. However, a rough breakup in her senior year led to disillusionment — cut to 10 years later, she continues to be cynical about romance.

The only person who’d witness this transition? Kang Hoo Young — played by Love All Play and Castaway Diva actor Chae Jong Hyeop. A financial planner in the present, he was always known to be cynical, sharp, and quite good-looking. The two knew each other as teenagers, having met at the age of 19 — bickering often yet harbouring a crush on each other. However, it’s when they meet a decade later on a blind date that feelings truly come to the fore.

Reflecting on her experience working with her co-star, Kim So Hyun was quoted by Soompi as stating, “Actor Chae Jong Hyeop laughs a lot, so the atmosphere on set was always bright. Thanks to that, we had fun filming.” He, in turn, revealed, “I think Kim So Hyun portrayed the role of Hong Joo in a more lovable and attractive way. Every scene with Hong Joo was enjoyable. Sometimes I even relied on her.”

Also in the picture? My Lovely Liar’s Yoon Ji-on as the narcissistic writer Bang Jun-ho — of whom Hong-joo is a big fan. He met her while publishing his first novel. Meanwhile, Melody of Love actress Kim Da-son will essay the role of English teacher Kim Hye-ji, who also happens to be Lee Hong-joo’s best friend.

The release date of Serendipity’s Embrace

Serendipity’s Embrace will drop on 22 July at 8:40 pm KST (5:10 pm IST) and will be available to stream on Viki.

Stay tuned for more.
