Eric Season 2: Is the Benedict Cumberbatch-starrer crime drama getting renewed?

Intriguing, intense and emotional are the three words that best describe Netflix’s recently released crime drama, Eric

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, the series has captivated audiences’ attention with its compelling narrative, complex characters and top-tier acting – not to miss Cumberbatch’s wild ’80s dance.

Created by Abi Morgan, the 6-episode series is a sweet father-son story until the son goes missing and the real unravelling of the mystery begins.

As viewers reach the series finale, people are forced to question the factual basis of the narrative and the possibility of an Eric season 2.

Here’s everything we know about the show’s origins and its renewal status.

But first, what is Netflix’s ‘Eric’ about?

Set in New York in the ’80s, the plot of the Netflix crime drama revolves around a puppeteer named Vincent Anderson – Cumberbatch’s character. After his son Edgar goes missing, Anderson distances himself from the people around him and starts to lose touch with reality. He creates a rather horrific puppet from his son’s drawings and names it Eric, hoping it will help him find his way to Edgar.

Fans are eagerly anticipating news about the possibility of a second season for Eric, especially with the outstanding performances and captivating storyline. However, creator Abi Morgan has stated that the show was intended to be a limited series, with most major storylines wrapping up in the initial six episodes. Netflix also labelled Eric as a limited series indicating there would be no second season. Even the emotional conclusion of the first season, where Anderson reunites with his son Edgar, makes this clear.

Morgan, in an interview with USA Today, acknowledged that the concept of exploring different missing person cases in a second season could be interesting, but the characters have resolved their arcs satisfactorily in the debut season. “The joy of a limited series is that it hopefully burns bright for that period,” she shared, adding, “I feel those characters have exorcised their demons and come to a resolution.”

Do we have a release date for ‘Eric’ season 2?

The show hasn’t been officially greenlit for a second season, so we don’t have a release date for Eric season 2 yet.

The series premiered on 30 May 2024 and is currently streaming on Netflix.
