It’s not every day that you get a show like Doctor Climax in Thailand. We’ve debated whether the country is ready for more projects like it, but whether it is or not, what’s clear is that there’s definitely an appetite for shows in the same vein, no phallic pun intended. All of the show’s eight episodes are available for your viewing pleasure but if you’re in the mood for similar shows, these six series might scratch that itch.

Shows like Doctor Climax that you might like
Sex Education
Balancing humour and earnestness while also being educational is no mere feat but Sex Education managed to pull it off. It shed light on some of the most awkward and real sexual situations that many are ashamed to talk about while still being a great TV series with an entertaining plotline. It’s hard not to miss the similarities with Doctor Climax. Perhaps the Thai series even took its cue from the British show.

Hormones: The Series
When Hormones: The Series first premiered back in 2013, it shook up the Thai entertainment industry for ignoring soap opera norms. Not only did the show follow a group of teenagers but it also unashamedly showcased the reality of what teenagers were facing, whether it was teenage sex, violence in schools, and pregnancy. For the conservative Thai society, this was a big and bold step especially back in 2013, but it paid off. The series was a critical and commercial success. There’s no doubt that it helped pave the way for shows like Doctor Climax to be made.

How to Get Away with Murder
Sure, How to Get Away with Murder is technically a legal and crime drama but it sure does have a lot of steamy scenes. Like, a lot. Sometimes you forget what the show is even about because of all the sex scenes. As soapy as the show sometimes is, it’s still an entertaining watch and could be your next binge if you want to amp up the steaminess and thrills after finishing Doctor Climax.

Big Mouth
The Thai series does a wonderful job of tackling taboo topics surrounding sex, but Big Mouth definitely does it in a more irreverent and ridiculous way. Then again, what do you expect from a show whose cast includes Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, and Maya Rudolph? The adult animated series depicts the awkwardness of becoming a teenager in all its ridiculous, awkward, and exaggerated glory. However ridiculous you’re expecting it to be if you haven’t watched this series yet, trust me: it’s wilder than you think.

The Serpent
One of the things Doctor Climax did so well was recreate Thailand in the ‘70s. From the architecture to the fashion and hairstyles, the aesthetics were spot-on and transported audiences back to the hair-spray heavy silk-shirt-wearing ‘70s. Another show that did this really well was The Serpent, which is also set in 1970’s Bangkok albeit with a much darker plot. This series follows Charles Sobhraj who gained the moniker The Serpent after murdering tourists. Like I said, this one’s dark.

The Believers
Doctor Climax tackles sexual taboos but this series takes on religion. Anyone who knows what Thai society is like knows just how audacious this is. The show follows three friends whose business fails and they find themselves in debt. They then have the genius idea of exploiting what one of them calls a “2,000-year-old business model”: Buddhist temples. Again, nothing too shocking for everyone else, but for Thailand, it’s pretty daring.
