<i>My Sweet Mobster</i>: Cast, plot, release date, & more on the new romantic comedy

JTBC’s latest K-drama is a romantic comedy that sees a former gang leader fall in love with a kids’ content creator. Set to drop on 12 June, My Sweet Mobster will feature actors Um Tae Goo, Han Sun Hwa, and Kwon Yool. Here’s all about it.

Known for hits like Reborn Rich, Strong Girl Bong-soon, and Gangnam Beauty — JTBC is one of the biggest names in the Korean entertainment game. 2024 saw it clock in major success with Welcome to Samdal-ri, Doctor Slump, and the ongoing The Atypical Family — each being hailed by critics and viewers for compelling storytelling. Joining the lineup is directors Kim Young-hwan and Kim Woo-hyun’s latest endeavour titled My Sweet Mobster. The romantic comedy follows a former criminal with a hardened personality and a lively and soft kid’s content creator. Here’s what we know of it so far.

The plot of My Sweet Mobster

A former gang leader leaves his criminal past behind by breaking up gangs recruiting convicts and giving them a new lease on life at his company. He soon crosses paths with his childhood friend who’s a kids’ content creator. Despite being opposites, the two grow closer. Also in the picture? A prosecutor who likes children and is deeply suspicious of criminals. “The script is full of cute lines and moments. As the two characters from completely different walks of life meet and clash, viewers can look forward to some enjoyable events,” actor Um Tae Goo was quoted saying by Soompi.

The Age of Shadows actor Um Tae Goo — best known for playing gritty, hardened characters — will essay the role of Seo Ji Hwan, the 36-year-old CEO of social enterprise Thirsty Deer. His character — a former gang leader — travels across the country to break up gangs and recruit members after their release from prison, giving them a fresh start. He struggles with expressing his emotions and is often buried in work.

Talking about his decision to take on the role, the actor was quoted by Soompi saying, “Because I’ve recently done a lot of darker projects and roles, I naturally wanted to connect with viewers through more lighthearted projects as well.” He then added, “That’s when I stumbled upon My Sweet Mobster, and because it’s a delightful and adorable drama, I thought to myself that I wanted to take on this new challenge.”

Alongside him is Backstreet Rookie actress and former member of girl group Secret Han Sun Hwa — who will step into the shoes of Seo Ji Hwan’s childhood friend and kids’ content creator Go Eun Ha or ‘Mini Unnie.’ Her character goes out of her way to keep children happy — all without expensive toys. And although her ratings are low, she remains determined. “The script came across as very cute and pure. Eun Ha’s character is bright and positive, with a healthy mind and heart, which made me want to cheer her on,” the actress explained to Soompi.

Also in the picture? Longing For You actor Kwon Yool, who will play prosecutor Jang Hyun Woo. His character supports and subscribes to Mini Unnie and loves being in the company of children. However, he’s deeply cynical about criminals, believing that people never change. Naturally, he’s quite suspicious about Seo Ji Hwan. Both, however, fall in love with Go Eun Ha.
