The Atypical Family ending explained: Does Da-hae survive the car accident?

Throughout the first 10 episodes of the 2024 Netflix K-drama The Atypical Family, depressed superhero Gwi-joo meets the mysterious Da-hae and regains his special powers. While the latter visits Gwi-joo’s family to scam them, she eventually ends up falling for Gwi-joo.

In the present timeline of the penultimate episode, Da-hae fakes her death to save Gwi-Joo’s life because she learns that his mother saw a dream of his death. She realises that Gwi-joo might die while saving Da-hae in the past timeline and decides to stay away from him. However, Gwi-joo discovers the truth about Da-hae’s fake car accident and rushes to meet her. The episode ends with the two hugging each other and promising to be together despite the difficult circumstances.

The Atypical Family ending explained: What happens during the fire mishap in the finale?

In the final episode of the fantasy romance K-drama The Atypical Family, fans find that Bok Gwi-joo is aware of his upcoming death, which his mother dreamt about. The scratch mark on his neck hints at the same, too. For context, the person who saved Da-hae from the fire mishap 13 years back had a red mark on his neck. So when Da-hae spots the mark on Gwi-joo’s neck, she is devastated that she won’t be able to change the future and save him. On the other hand, Gwi-joo requests Da-hae to keep his mark a secret. He explains to her that he plans to tell his family about it after his daughter In-a’s (played by Park So-yi) school dance competition.

Elsewhere, Gwi-Joo receives a call from his former colleague from the fire department who wants to inform him about the fire incident involving Da-hae 13 years ago. At school, In-a and Da-hae anxiously wait for Gwi-Joo who arrives on time and cheers on In-a and her group. Once his daughter’s dance performance ends, Gwi-Joo rushes outside. When Da-hae stops him to ask the reason, his expression is enough to let Dae-hae know that his time has come. Gwi-joo leaves Da-hae, promising to return to her one day.

Meanwhile, Gwi-Joo’s father informs Da-hae that according to his wife Man-heum’s (played by Go Doo-shim) dreams, the fire mishap happens at In-a’s school. Da-hae rushes to find In-a who is stuck inside the school. When the duo are about to escape together, a heavy wall falls on them, but Gwi-Joo appears in time to save them. He requests Da-hae to leave with In-a. While Da-hae pleads and asks him not to travel back to the past, Gwi-joo doesn’t listen and travels 13 years back to save Da-hae. The scene then shifts to the Bok family mourning Gwi-joo’s death.
