Malaysian Women in Beauty: Chryseis Tan shares her vision for a gleaming future

This International Women’s Day, we shine a spotlight on the trailblazing journey of Chryseis Tan, the visionary founder of LUMI Beauty.

Chryseis Tan needs no introduction. An entrepreneur and investor, she wears multiple hats from the Berjaya Group to her own skincare brand, LUMI Beauty. If LUMI Beauty hasn’t crossed your radar, here’s the 411: founded by Tan, LUMI was meant to introduce local consumers to effective skincare made only using botanicals. To that end, the Malaysian skincare brand has firmly established itself in every Malaysian’s skincare routine.

True to its mantra of ‘gleam before glam,’ LUMI Beauty’s natural, cruelty-free skincare line actively harnesses botanical ingredients to unveil your inner radiance. From igniting confidence through her brand’s ethos to fostering inclusivity and support among women, Chryseis Tan shares with us her inspiring narrative of resilience, passion, and the transformative power of women uplifting women.

What inspired you, as a female entrepreneur, to start LUMI Beauty and how does the brand empower women in the beauty industry?

As a woman entrepreneur, founding LUMI Beauty was inspired by my passion for celebrating women’s uniqueness and fostering confidence in their own skin. LUMI Beauty’s skincare products also aim to deliver optimal-but-gentle efficacy without breaking the bank while championing our tagline of “Gleam Before Glam”, which simply means that your skin’s natural radiance gets to shine before any makeup is on.

As the founder of LUMI Beauty, how have you navigated the beauty industry as a woman entrepreneur and what challenges have you encountered?

Navigating the beauty industry as a woman entrepreneur has been an enriching yet challenging journey. The skincare landscape is dynamic and ever-evolving, presenting us with the obstacle of ensuring accessibility for customers across various regions of Malaysia and beyond. Many potential customers prefer experiencing skincare products in person before making a purchase.

To overcome this challenge, my dedicated team and I have tirelessly worked to bridge the gap. We’ve achieved significant milestones, including being the first local skincare brand to launch a standalone store in The Exchange TRX. Additionally, strategic partnerships with offline retailers like Ascen Plus Pharmacy and the installation of skincare vending machines in key locations within the Klang Valley have allowed us to bring the LUMI Beauty experience closer to our diverse and discerning customer base. We are definitely working hard to bring our products closer to many more, stay tuned!

In a predominantly female consumer base, how does LUMI Beauty address the diverse needs and preferences of women in its product offerings?

It’s our goal to ensure that we do our best to understand the diverse needs and preferences of our predominantly female consumer base. We recognise that every woman is unique and their skincare preferences vary depending on genetics, environment, lifestyle, and more.

Through our extensive research and customer feedback, we ensure versatility when it comes to our offerings. Our products allow customers of all skin types including those with sensitive skin types and even pregnant/breastfeeding moms to have a gleaming experience with incorporating versatile ingredients.

What advice would you give to aspiring women entrepreneurs who are considering entering the beauty industry and starting their brands?

For aspiring women entrepreneurs entering the beauty industry, my advice is to embrace your unique vision and passion, remaining resilient in the face of challenges. Understand your audience intimately, continuously educate yourself, and build a strong support system. Celebrate milestones, and learn from setbacks, viewing each experience as a valuable lesson. Enjoy the journey, as personal growth is integral to building a successful and meaningful beauty brand. I wish all of you good luck!

Can you share your perspective on the importance of women supporting women in the beauty and business landscape?

Supporting women in the beauty and business landscape is like weaving a tapestry of empowerment and camaraderie. It’s not just about breaking down barriers; it’s about creating a bond where each thread contributes to a vibrant and diverse pattern. Imagine it as a collaborative journey where women’s unique perspectives blend, resulting in end products that speak to the heart of every individual while catering to their different needs.

Beyond the boardroom, it’s about sharing stories, experiences, and a helping hand – a community where mentorship flourishes, creating stepping stones for each woman’s professional journey.

By supporting one another, we’re not just challenging norms; we’re painting a canvas of inclusivity and resilience in the beauty industry – as a matter of fact, across all industries, fostering a space where every woman’s voice is heard and celebrated.
